I had the pleasure of making 2D animations of medieval images for Friulian director Marco D’Agostini, helping to tell a legend in the documentary Patriae – Viaggio nel Patriarcato di Aquileia.
In this project I worked in collaboration with another animator, who did the drawings, to bring to life a section of the film dedicated to the legend of the birth of the Patriarchate of Aquileia.
Patriae – Journey through the Patriarchate of Aquileia: a documentary between history and art
The documentary follows the journey of Carolina, a 14-year-old girl who explores an important historical phase and collects the most significant passages of more than three centuries of events (1077-1420).
From its founding to its growth as a fluid politico-religious entity, a synthesis of center and periphery, city and country, to its decline, partly due to the alliance of part of the Friulian nobility with the Venetians.
Throughout the narrative, the protagonist encounters symbolic figures related to different historical periods, imagines constructions and ambushes, observes works of art and monuments, and listens to the words of experts. This is a fascinating journey through the history of the Patriarchate of Aquileia, rich in suggestion and inspiration.

As a 2D animator, I worked using Adobe After Effects to give movement and depth to the medieval images. Through these animations, the story comes to life on screen, enriching the visual narrative of the documentary.
If you are interested in the history of the Patriarchate of Aquileia and its fascinating journey through the centuries, this film offers an engaging and richly evocative journey.
